Details
Based on the cult classic Jeff Wayne concept album of 1978 (which is itself an extravagant interpretation of the classic 1898 science fiction novel by H. G. Wells), Jeff Wayne's: The War of the Worlds is an entertaining mixture of strategy and action with aspects of gameplay that range from cunning deliberation to outright firepower.
Set in the late 1890s in Victorian England, the Martians have landed on Earth, set up base in Scotland, and have started to attack London. The player has the choice of playing as a human or the Martian commander, the former set on ridding the country of the aliens with more numerous human forces and the latter dedicated to conquering the whole planet with technologically advanced Martian war machines.
The totally non-linear gameplay ensures that there is no set number or order to the missions. The player is in complete control of the sequence and timeline of the conflict. The player also controls the research, development, production, placement and deployment of all forces on land, below the ocean, and underground in his or her quest to survive.
Featuring the voices of Richard Burton and Nigel Hawthorne as well as texture-mapped 3D animation, this game from Rage and GT Interactive is designed to entertain for hours and hours. The game's use of over 60 minutes of music from the original double-album imparts a mysterious and powerful atmosphere.
